Westchester was built quickly and largely at once, as housing for the aviation and aerospace workforce that arrived through the 1940s and 1950s, and its chimneys reflect that. These are modest, standardised systems: small fireboxes, short flues, simple stacks, built to a price on tract schedules. They are not bad chimneys, but they are seventy-plus years old and they were never over-engineered to begin with. Two things distinguish the area for us. First, proximity to the water — Westchester sits on the bluff above Playa del Rey and Dockweiler, and the salt-laden air that comes off it corrodes galvanised caps, chase covers and flashing at a rate that surprises people who moved here from inland. We specify stainless to the exposure here as a matter of course. Second, it is a neighbourhood in the middle of a long remodelling wave, and a remodel is when a fireplace tends to get changed, boxed in or vented in a way nobody documents.
